When to Fold, the Odds in Poker

Hold them or fold them. Knowing the time to fold is the key to the game of poker. How do you determine when you should fold? You are looking at the hand and trying to determine if what you have can beat what everyone else has. That is calculating the odds and making a decision based on what the outcome is likely to be. Sometimes that is easy and sometimes it is very complex. If you are using just cards that are in your hand to calculate your next move then you are not using all the information available to you.

Let’s take a look at what this looks like. You are playing Hold’em. The game is $1 and a max bet of $2. Six players and you are the last better. No surprise, $6 in the pot. Your hand shows a ♣A-Q and the flop is a ♣K-♣Q-♣6. So you know you are sitting on a pair of ladies and an ace high flush is still possible.

The next rounds of bets go $1. Two call and two fold. So do you raise, call or fold? If one player is sitting on a king your hand is in trouble. What do the unseen cards, outs, hold? The cards in the hands of the other players are cards you will not get. When you start to figure out what cards are out there you need to include the unseen cards. So the math is simple. How many cards can improve your hand? Two ladies could help, three aces could help, and any club will do it. That is 2+3+9, the two queens, the three aces and the nine remaining clubs. There are 47 cards you have not seen or 14 out 47 cards can help you on the turn and 33 will not help you. So you are looking at 2.4 to 1. This comes from dividing 14 in to 33. The exact numbers are not important to know your next step.

For the pot to be worth the risk there needs to be more than 2.4 times the amount you need to risk (the call). You need a reward of $2.40 or more to make it worth while. The risk is $1 and the pot has $9 in it. The odds are paying 9 to 1 which are significantly better than the 2.4 to 1 you need so call. As you play the odds will start to come as second nature. You can practice by dealing some hands with no players and calculating the odds and then looking to see how it goes.

If there just one card missing between the connecting cards, the chances of this gap being made up are good. But in case the gap is two or more, then you should not think about trying to connect them, as the chances of having the right cards being dealt are extremely less. You can't make it straight if you need 2 or more cards and so it is not advisable to keep waiting for something like that to happen.

You should prefer pairs which are smaller. Pairs are thought to be trash by some people but they are not all that useless. You can indeed make successful flops with such pairs, but the timing of such flops has to be right. If you have such a pair in your hand, don't wait too much, because the more you wait, the lesser your winning chances shrink.

In poker you get to know if your trash hand is good enough or not, at the flop. To gain the most, you should observe the hands of your opponents after the flop. Look at the kinds of hands that they had and make a comparison of these hands with yours. Predictability can often make or break you in a poker game. Even a player with top notch strategy and luck can be thwarted if they show consistency in their playing style. Your opponents will be watching you constantly, looking for anything and everything that will give them an edge over you. If you're playing certain hands the same way every time – like clockwork – they're going to pick up on it. Change pace and keep them guessing.

What is It?

Basically, changing pace means varying your playing style. As most players probably know, there are four main playing styles: tight-passive, tight-aggressive; loose-passive, loose-aggressive. Each of these styles has their strengths and weaknesses. That being said, it's fairly easy to plug your opponents into which category they belong if paying attention. Likewise, you can be sure, if they're any good at all, your opponents are plugging you into a category, too.

When you let them plug you, though, and you stay constant with your strategy, there will be your downfall.

Why do It?

Changing pace give you the advantage of unpredictability. Especially if you're playing with opponents you've played with before, if they know what type of player you are, they're going to adjust their strategy to beat your type of play. If you let this happen, you've already lost.

Lets say you're a loose-aggressive player. Your tendencies include playing a lot of hands, betting big, and bluffing – a lot. If I know this, I'm going to be more inclined to call you out on a lot of hands. With your strategy of bluffing, you're hoping not many people are going to call if you bet large enough, but since I know your type of play, I'm going to call or even raise you, adjusting my strategy to yours. Right now, your strategy just went down the toilet, and your stay at my table could be very short lived.

How To Do It.

You're, basically, going to pull the ol' switcheroo on them. You're going to want to aim for opposites.

Generally, you want to play the way you normally do at the beginning. Let your opponent get comfortable. Once they think they have your strategy figured out, switch it up on them.

Lets say you're naturally a tight player. This means you're only going to play the best starting hands, you're not going to take too many chances, and when you bet, you're going to have solid hands. Play this way for awhile. Let your opponents figure you out. When you win a huge pot in a showdown, show your cards, letting everyone know that when you bet big, you have the cards to back it up. After an hour or so, start to play more hands. Maybe lay down a huge bet, bluffing. You'll notice that most of your opponents are going to fold. Why? Because they know your playing type, and they know – rather, think they know – that you have a solid hand. You've just stolen the pot. Continue betting aggressively and playing more hands, and they'll have no idea what to do.

Not Getting Caught.

Good players will notice when you're changing pace; however, amateurs will not. A pro may be able to pick up on it in a matter of minutes; whereas, a beginner may take up to an hour. Do not remain consistent with your changes. If you play tight for an hour, then play aggressive for an hour, then go back to tight for the next hour, a good player is going to recognize this pattern and pounce. By changing frequently, and not in a predetermined pattern, you're going to keep your opponents guessing, and always one step behind you.
